Diabetes

Did you know … that diabetes mellitus, if uncontrolled, can lead to serious health consequences? Diabetes is a major cause of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and foot ulcers. But it does not have to come to that …

Have labs checked for a HgbA1c. If it is between 5.7 and 6.4%, you have prediabetes, which increases your risk of diabetes. Diabetes is diagnosed when you have an A1c of 6.5% or greater on 2 occasions. Eat more fruits and vegetables, have lean proteins (meat, fish, seafood, dairy, nuts, beans) and avoid concentrated sweets such as juices, sodas (even diet, which also raises blood sugar), sugary foods, white bread, white rice and white potatoes. Have limited amounts of sweet potatoes, whole grain bread/rice/pasta. Increase your daily exercise, even if it is no more than a 30 minute walk. And see your doctor for help keeping your A1c below 7% if you do have diabetes.
